FARMINGTON —A California man pleaded not guilty in federal court in Albuquerque to selling fake American Indian jewelry.

Andrew Gene Alvarez, a 59-year-old man from Wofford Heights, Calif., is facing five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for selling fake jewelry at the Native Treasures Show at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center on May 28, 2011, U.S. Attorney Kenneth Gonzales said in a prepared statement.

The Indian Arts and Crafts Act became law in 1935 and prohibits the sale of any good that is falsely labeled as an Indian product.
