KIRTLAND — For the Kirtland Central football team, the motto for the season is to fight all night.

That fighting mentality has the Broncos back to .500 at 3-3 after opening the season with three-straight losses, and a large part of that success is due to senior Alex Kamae.

In the three wins against EspaƱola Valley, Gallup and Capital, Kamae has ran for over 100 yards and a touchdown on offense, and recorded an interception on defense in each of the wins.

After winning just four games in the last two seasons, Kamae is excited to be part of the turn around and credited his teammates for giving him motivation.

"It's been great. I just make sure I play my best," he said. "It's all the team. They keep my head up and make sure I come back the next play ready to go. I've tried my hardest to help the team out because it's my senior year. I want to impact the players' lives and help with the underclassmen."

Kirtland Central's first-year head coach Kevin Graham said his job coming into a new team was made a lot easier by Kamae's presence.

"Ever since I've been here, he's been the first one to practice and the last one to leave," Graham said. "He leads by example and doesn't take a play off. He goes 100 percent every play no matter if it's practice or in the game. It's phenomenal. He's vital. He provides that spark and it all goes back to that he goes hard all the time and doesn't take any downs off."

Kamae credited Graham for bringing a winning mindset to the team.

"Our coach has been everything to us," Kamae said.

"He makes sure we fight all night — that we do our jobs and don't take off any plays."

Kamae and the Broncos now have their sights set on Bloomfield and the district schedule as their fight continues.

"No matter what, we fight back. When we lost those three games, it would have been easy to get down, but they never did," Graham said of his team. "From day one, our objective was to get better every week and I honestly think we've done that.We know from here on out, it's going to be tough. There's not an easy game in the bunch. We're just going to try to get better and play every play like Kamae does — with 100 percent effort."
