FARMINGTON — A pedestrian stumbled into traffic and was struck and killed Sunday night near the 124 milepost on U.S. Hwy 550, south of Bloomfield.

Nathan Sylvester, 28, of Bloomfield, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Todd Begay, 35, of Aztec, was driving south in the outside lane and saw what he thought might have been an animal on the passenger side of his vehicle.

He was unable to avoid Sylvester and collided with him.

It was not until Begay turned his car around to check that he saw that he struck a person. He immediately called 911 and began CPR efforts.

San Juan County Sheriff's Office is investigating the fatality.

Lieutenant Cory Turner said that Sylvester had several full and empty cans of alcohol on him. Toxicology results may take several weeks or months.

Begay showed no signs of impairment and there were no signs of foul play. The investigation is ongoing.
