FARMINGTON — The second time was a charm for the proposed new fieldhouse at Hutchinson Field as Farmington school board members approved a $2 million construction bid during their meeting Thursday night.

With a recommendation from the Finance Committee, the Board of Education approved the slightly more than $2 million base bid by Uselman Construction for the demolition of the existing fieldhouse and construction of a new 11,524 square foot building on the Farmington High School grounds.

The project rebid was held on Tuesday with five bidders participating following the December rejection of all first-round bids. Those offers came in more than 20 percent above the projected $2.2 million budget.

The school district is unable to accept bids in which the lowest bid is up to 10 percent higher than the budgeted project funds.

Uselman Construction's bid of about $2.07 million is approximately $623,000 lower than the lowest bid received during the first round, which was Jaynes Corporation's $2.69 million. Jaynes Corporation is currently finishing construction on the new Tibbetts Middle School located near Twin Peaks Boulevard.

The rebid placed by Jaynes was about $2.25 million, approximately $184,000 higher than Uselman's bid.

The second lowest bid was made by Mick Rich Contractors at a little less than $2.2 million, $128,000 more than the winning bid.

Assistant Superintendent of Operations James Barfoot said a number of items were changed in the budget, including heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and construction materials for walls and floors.

"We eliminated evaporative cooling, it was actually cheaper to install air conditioning into that building," Barfoot said.

Specific "impact" drywall designed to go throughout the building was limited to the weight room and the locker room along with the Mondo athletic flooring, which is thick rubber.

Once contracts are signed, work is scheduled to start immediately with a projected completion date of September or October.

The project was originally estimated to be completed by end of June or early July.
