The Aztec Tiger wrestlers put together a solid performance at Robertson High's Cardinal Invitational on Saturday in Las Vegas, N.M.

The Tigers finished in third place at the 20-team tournament, behind Los Lunas and Silver.

"I was really happy with the way we wrestled," said Aztec head coach Monte Maxwell. "The team is really starting to come together."

The Tigers had three champions at the meet with Adam Lucero (170), Brad Hardin (220) and Landon McNeil (285) all winning their weight classes in the gold bracket.

Aztec has a dual meet on Thursday with Bloomfield as its final match before the district meet on Feb. 15 and 16.

"We have a dang tough district, so we'll have to get there and see where we're at," Maxwell said.

Farmington had an improved showing at the meet.

Brandon Padilla emerged victorious in the 126-pound weight class for the Scorps while Cobey Hamblin (113) and Essiel Carrasco (170) placed fourth in their weight classes in the gold bracket.

Champ Mendoza (145) and Tierney Staley (160) took first place in the silver bracket.

"Everyone wrestled well," said FHS assistant coach Jay Boushee. "The highlights were Brandon Padilla, Champ Mendoza and Tierney Staley who all brought home a first-place finish. This served as a good tune up for the district tournament. Now, we need to focus on our dual with Kirtland on Thursday and then the district tournament the following Saturday."
