The project will be funded entirely through the utility's capital improvement fund, said Gary Rollstin, project construction manager for the Farmington Electric Utility System.
"We definitely don't want to lose (capacity)," Rollstin said. "It's just upgrades to the system."
The two new transformers will replace aging equipment, including one transformer that is more than 50 years old, he said.
"We had a study done last year that said we needed to upgrade," Rollstin said. "We want to keep up with a growing system."
The new equipment should provide more system security and stability, ensuring that lights across town stay on, he said.
"Two transformers could go out and we could still provide power," Rollstin said.
The city's electrical utility and purchasing staff are recommending that a bid be awarded to HD Supply Utility, of Lubbock, Tex.
