FARMINGTON — Could you imagine actor and director Seth MacFarlane as a gun-slingin' sharpshooter from the ol' West?

You may not have to.

MacFarlane is coming to New Mexico to shoot his latest project, "A Million Ways to Die in the West," and he may film part of it in Shiprock.

The Western comedy, likened to the 1974 classic "Blazing Saddles," will be a step out of the box for MacFarlane, creator of the television series "Family Guy" and director of last year's hit comedy "Ted."

"There were some folks that were going to look at locations (March 22)," said Shiprock Chapter President Duane "Chili" Yazzie last week. "What was the guy's name? Seth MacFarlane? They were going to fly into Farmington."

Yazzie said MacFarlane did not show because inclement weather interrupted his flight, but he is expected to reschedule his visit.

"One of the shots is supposed to be in the 1860s or 1890s with a guy riding horseback and bad guys chasing him," Yazzie said.

Whether or not MacFarlane decides that Shiprock is the right background for his Wild West flick, the film will be shot in New Mexico, a casting call earlier this year confirmed.

Elizabeth Gabel Casting wrote on its website March 24 that the film would go into production on May 6. The company is looking for men with grown out mustaches and facial hair, as well as Native Americans and women with long, naturally colored hair.

"Please be patient as we are still in pre-produciton meetings with Seth and choosing featured extras next week, then we will begin to call to book," casting director Elizabeth Gabel wrote.

Liam Neeson, Giovanni Ribisi, Charlize Theron and Amanda Seyfried are just a few of the big name celebrities that are considering roles in the film, various media have reported.

Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild co-wrote the script with MacFarlane. Media Rights Capital and Scott Stuber will produce the project, according to a Media Rights Capital spokesperson.
