FARMINGTON — Call them holy rollers with horsepower.

Today, the Farmington chapter of the Christian Motorcyclist Association, called the Sonshine Road Runners, will host a "biker blessing" at the Farmington Museum.

"We feel safer on the road after having our bikes blessed," said club president Jerry Smiley. "We've blessed folks' wheelchairs, cars, walkers — even a police officer's bicycle one time."

Recipients of the groups' blessings will ride away with holy protection and will receive a sticker that declares "I was blessed in 2013" as irrefutable proof.

With 150,000 members worldwide, the association's mission is "sharing and showing the love of Jesus Christ to motorcyclists," according to its website.

Farmington's chapter is one of 14 in New Mexico and includes about 60 members from Kirtland to Aztec, Members are armed with biker Bibles and are ready to minister to other biker groups and anyone in need of spiritual support.

"Our group is very involved in the community," Smiley said. "We stay busy. It's a ministry that gives us a special path."

Once a year, the two-wheeled worshipers convoy to a prison in Grants, near Albuquerque, and minister to the incarcerated.

"And sometimes we just pick a church and surprise em," Smiley said. "Pastor Bob Moon of My Father's House Church over on Broadway lets us roll right down the aisle.

The group's ultimate goal is to share the word of God, spreading happiness and salvation to those who aren't put off by the roar of a motorcycle engine.

"Some people tell us our name's an oxymoron," Smiley said. "It's not to us, but we can be a surprise to people who haven't yet considered the joy of witnessing Christ while on a bike."

Jerry Smiley and his wife, Kay, have been members of the Road Runners since 1996. The couple lives in Aztec and rides together on their Honda Goldwing.

"I'd hurt somebody if I rode it on my own," joked Kay Smiley.

If Jesus had a motorcycle, Jerry Smiley believes it would have been a Harley.

"A lot of times people see a biker go down the street and somehow think the worst of that person," he said. "Maybe they'd be surprised by the good we do for others."
