FARMINGTON — Ubru, an independent local retailer of brewing supplies, celebrated its reopening last week at Hutton Plaza.

On April 1, Ubru moved to the new location at 2501 E. 20th St., Unit 3.

Fred Clossum, who owns the shop with his wife, Linda, said their inventory has grown since the couple purchased the business in May 2011 from Daniel Sawyer.

"We were just kind of outgrowing the building," he said. "We always knew we would move."

The new location is 990 square feet, but it also has 10 foot-high ceilings that aid storage.

Ubru was previously located at 1408 N. Hutton Ave.

Among the shop's most popular items are beer kits that contain ingredients needed to brew. Also popular are grains, hops and yeast, which brewers can use to create their own recipes.

The store's shelves are filled with buckets, paddles and strainers used to brew. Ubru also sells winemaking supplies.

Ubru draws from a wide market area. Clossum believes the nearest homebrew shops are in Bernalillo to the south and Grand Junction, Colo. to the north. Customers come to Ubru from throughout southwest Colorado, including Pagosa Springs and Cortez.

A homebrew shop opened in Durango in October 2011, but it closed several months later.

The American Homebrewers Association estimates 1 million Americans brew beer at home at least once a year. Homebrewing was federally legalized in 1978. The hobby remains outlawed in only two states, Alabama and Mississippi.


Homebrewing has grown alongside commercial craft breweries. Many commercial breweries have their roots in homebrewing hobbies, including Durango's Ska Brewing, the largest brewery in the Four Corners.

The American Homebrewers Association estimates at least 90 percent of commercial brewers began at home.

Clossum said he has noticed an uptick in interest. The Four Corners is home to several homebrewing clubs.

"From what I can see, yes, it is a growing hobby," he said. "People are getting more into it. Certainly our business has grown the two years we've had it."
