No. 9 Aztec dropped its playoff opener to No. 8 Los Alamos 11-1 on Friday.

The Tigers entered the bottom of the fifth inning trailing just 3-1 but committed five errors, allowing the Hilltoppers to pull away.

Tanner Moore took the loss after throwing four innings for Aztec.

“He threw well and kept us in the game, but the defense didn’t help him out,” said Aztec assistant coach Brett Alexander.

The Tigers opened the scoring in the top of the third inning with an RBI-single by Devin Cole, but Los Alamos responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-1 lead.

Game 2 in the best-of-three series will take place today, with the Tigers needing to win twice to advance into the quarterfinals.

“We’re going to move a couple kids around and hope they play better,” Alexander said.

Game 1 between No. 9 Bloomfield and No. 8 Portales in the 3A bracket was rained out on Friday.

The schools will play games today at 1 and 3 p.m. If a third game is necessary, it will be played on Sunday.
