AZTEC — When students enter Aztec High School's art classes, they often tell the teacher, Zack Pettijohn, about the art work they did in elementary school that was displayed during the district's spring art show. Pettijohn said the students will vividly describe the various pieces to him.

For more than 30 years, the Aztec Municipal School District has been showing off student artwork. This year's show started last weekend and will continue through this weekend at Park Avenue Elementary. Around 1,500 pieces of artwork — created by students ranging from prekindergarten through high school seniors — will be on display.

While looking over the various pieces of student artwork, the 54 teachers involved in the show will give out blue ribbons to about 90 pieces of art. These pieces will then be exhibited at the State Fair in September.

Pettijohn said the art chosen to go to the State Fair will represent the best of Aztec Municipal School district's student art.

In the past, the show was only open on weekdays, however, in order to provide more opportunities for the public to view the artwork, the teachers decided to extend the show into the weekend.

Starting Tuesday, Aztec students were bussed to Park Avenue Elementary in order to view their displayed artwork. The students were bussed based on the class and school they attended. Bussing will continue until Friday.

Pettijohn said there is a lot of organization that goes on behind the scenes putting on such a large art display.

"We have a lot of help from our school," he said.

And parent volunteers help keep the show open for the public to see.

Pettijohn said art in schools is important because it encourages creativity. While many famous people were good at what they did, Pettijohn said, what set them apart was their creativity.
