FARMINGTON — The New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange is kicking off its BeWellNM regional tour through New Mexico.

NMHIX will also connect anyone with questions to a health care guide, insurance agent or broker. A bilingual call center at 1-855-99NMHIX is handling calls 24/7.

The plans offered provide tax credits to individuals whose annual household income is between 138 and 400 percent of the federal poverty level. There are also coverage plans in the event of a major emergency or accident for people younger than 30 years of age. Individuals can use an online cost calculator on the website to estimate what their health insurance premium will cost.

In addition, through the Small Business Health Options Program, or SHOP, businesses with 50 or fewer employees can enroll in an insurance plan. Their employees are eligible to sign up for coverage under the plan the business has selected beginning Nov. 1.

Anyone who is a legal resident of New Mexico, including enrolled members of the Navajo and Apache tribes and the state's 19 pueblos, is eligible for coverage. Only those who meet income guidelines are eligible for subsidies. Seniors who are on Medicare will not be affected and can keep their same Medicare coverage.

Individuals who have affordable insurance coverage through an employer will not be eligible for NMHIX. Affordable insurance coverage is defined as coverage that costs an employee no more than 9.5 percent of their annual income, not including the portion of the premium paid by the employer.

About 83,000 New Mexico residents are eligible to enroll for health insurance through NMHIX in 2014.
