BLOOMFIELD — Think pink, with a little mud thrown in for good measure.

The Bloomfield Fire Department will show pink pride when it hosts a race and mud run Saturday.

In its third year, the Get Pinked run will benefit the Cathy Lincoln Memorial Cancer Fund, a project of the San Juan Regional Medical Center. Last year, the department raised more than $1,700 for the cancer charity.

This year, the popular charity looks to up the ante by throwing some mud in the mix.

Fire Chief George Duncan and Capt. John Mohler were inspired to give Bloomfield its own mud run after participating in Aztec's X Run 5K in June.

"We did the mud run, and it was so much fun we decided to throw one in. This year, we are updating the event to include some obstacles and lots of mud in the 5K and keeping the one-mile a fun walk and a no-mud 5K," Duncan said.

The event will kick off at 9 a.m. at the Multicultural Center for a one-mile walk or run and a 5K run, followed by the new muddy 5K at 10 a.m.

Check-in and on-site registration will be from 1 to 7 p.m. today at the Bloomfield Fire Department or from 7 to 8:50 a.m. Saturday at the Bloomfield Multicultural Center.

"The mud run will bring people down to the river trail system and wind through there for 16 obstacles," George said. "There will be mud pits and water obstacles. You'll be challenged to scale an 8-foot wall and a cargo net and crawl through culverts. You know, just good, dirty, pink fun."

Participants can run solo or in teams of four. Medals will be awarded at the end of the races.

"It's also a great time to get down to the river this time of year. The trees are turning," George said. "And the beautiful thing with this event is that it's as safe as possible without diluting the fun. It's what can we do to help out with this important cause."
