AZTEC — If you're an older adult and need assistance or are rehabilitating after surgery, a new business in Aztec is here to help.

Comfort Keepers, a caregiving service located on Aztec Boulevard in Aztec, opened for business Wednesday with a ribbon-cutting celebration attended by members of the Farmington Chamber of Commerce's redcoats.

Comfort Keepers owner Linda Schaffer started the business with her younger sister four years ago.

"We're an agency that specializes in interactive caregiving that offers a level of personal service and companionship that other services simply don't offer," Schaffer said. "We offer free in-home assessments and are available every day of the year, day or night."

The agency so far has trained and hired four caregivers and plans to hire more as needed. Schaffer also owns another franchise near Albuquerque with more than 40 caregivers. The new Aztec business will provide care to seniors throughout San Juan County and up into southwest Colordado, Schaffer said.

"Interactive caregiving is an integral part of what we do at Comfort Keepers," she said. "That is different from everyone else in the industry. We have very high standards to ensure that our clients are socially, mentally and emotionally engaged so our seniors can enjoy a higher quality of life in the comfort of their own homes."

Kim Hicks, Redcoats president, presented Schaffer and office manager Donna Yates with a welcome certificate from the Chamber.

"For me, this is personal," said Hicks, adding that her aunt died because she didn't receive the kind of close care services like Comfort Keepers provides.

Schaffer had a lot of drive-by traffic from ongoing roadwork at Light Plant Road just out the window, but so far she has not had seen her first client.

"We are here for the community. The biggest referral source we have is word-of-mouth, though because we're a national brand, we have a big Internet presence so people can find us," Schaffer said. We're hoping to have new clients soon to show what we can do."
