FARMINGTON — Feat of Clay Gallery in Aztec is encouraging people to buy local art during the holiday season this year.

The gallery will host its annual Holiday Art Show on Friday, featuring each co-op member's most recent art.

"It's just a chance for all of us to get together with our customers," Curt Stafford, a gallery member, said.

Stafford said while sales have been down this year, the gallery saw an increase in November sales and the members hope it is the beginning of an upward trend.

Stafford is displaying his two most recent paintings -- "Taylor Lake" and "Flower Garden."

The painting "Taylor Lake" is based on a photograph Janet Grenawalt, a Feat of Clay mosaic artist, took near Gunnison, Colo., where she has a cabin.

Stafford looked through Grenawalt's photos until he found one he wanted to paint. The photo showed a little lake with the mountains behind it.

"I just thought that was a beautiful scene," Stafford said.

The second painting, "Flower Garden," is one of two paintings Stafford did based on a photograph of his niece's garden in Washington. The other painting he sent to his niece as a college graduation present.

The holiday show is the last gourd artist Lona Warne will participate in as a member of the co-op.

This year, Warne began to display her art at galleries in Durango, Colo. and Albuquerque. The gourd art has become so popular, she said she no longer has the ability to keep up at three different galleries.

However, Warne will display some of her lesser-known art -- collages. These collages are part of her "mad-house-wife" art that combines old photographs with whimsical sayings.

Around six years ago, Warne decided to take a break from gourd art and study collage. When she returned to gourd art, she began to combine collage aspects with the gourds. She said this technique has been well received.

Warne said she enjoys gourd art because it's so natural. In all her art, she tries to incorporate parts of nature. For instance, she has set some of her recent gourd ornaments into driftwood.

"That's why I call my studio The Nature of Art," Warne said.
