FARMINGTON — People travel to the Southwest from all over the world to experience a climate and landscape that is like none other.

Yet just like many New Yorkers have never climbed to the top of the Empire State Building, there are countless places right in our backyard that many people have yet to see.

Each month this year, The Daily Times' outdoors section will highlight places in and around the Four Corners that you have likely have heard of, but maybe have never gotten the chance to visit. Maybe you have been there, but it has been years. Or maybe it is a place that you hear about so much it has lost its appeal, and you need a fresh perspective to make it new again.

To kick things off, we'll bring you a story at the end of this month about ice climbing in the world-famous ice park in Ouray, Colo.

You can expect to see a story at the end of each month showcasing a place in the Four Corners -- and an idea for what to do there. By the end of 2014, you'll have a dozen ways to get better acquainted with the area.

We also want to hear from you as you enjoy these incredible places. Take pictures while you're there, tell us about your experience and we may include you in a year-end wrap up.

If you're looking for New Year's resolutions you can check off throughout the year, our Four Corners Bucket List is a great way to make 2014 more fulfilling. We hope it'll encourage you to explore your home, learn new activities and, most importantly, get outdoors. Let's make it a great 2014.
