FARMINGTON — A local theater group is looking for playwrights and directors for an upcoming "Evening of Entertainment."

Bottom of the Barrel Productions is taking contest submissions of 10-minute plays that have never been published or produced. A panel of judges will select their six favorite plays. The theater group is also looking for directors for the plays.

P.J. Gillen, the group's president, said the directors don't have to have any prior experience.

She said one of the organization's goals is to get people of all levels involved in community theater, which is why they started the play competition.

"Writing a full-length play is really daunting," Gillen said.

She said 10-minute plays, which are approximately 10 to 12 pages long, are much easier for first-time playwrights.

Also, the plays will have smaller casts and won't be as technical as full length productions, which will make it easier for first-time directors. Gillen said the group is asking each play to have no more than five on-stage characters.

Once the plays and directors have been selected, the group will hold auditions for the roles. Gillen said people can audition for roles in multiple plays.

In April, the public will have an opportunity to see the plays during an Evening of Entertainment. Audience members will vote on their favorite play.

"It's kind of nice to let the audience choose," Gillen said.

She said the group is asking playwrights to avoid excessive offensive language and hopes that the plays will be family friendly.

By allowing people of all levels to participate, Gillen said the group hopes to help people discover their talent. She said many people are intimidated about directing or writing a play.

"This is just one of the ways that we are trying to continue to grow the community of theater in the area," Gillen said.
