FARMINGTON — The Humane Society of the Four Corners is hosting a charity auction Saturday to raise money for spaying and neutering pets.

Bites and Bids Charity Auction will start at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Farmington Civic Center, 200 W. Arrington St.

The event raises money for the humane society's low-cost spay and neuter efforts. Tickets to the auction are $20 per person. A dozen local food vendors will provide the food.

"You can eat as much as you want," said Traci Fletcher, a member of the humane society's board of directors.

The Daily Times is among the groups sponsoring the fundraiser.

The auction includes two parts, a silent auction and a live auction. The silent auction includes 350 items, such as vintage neon bar signs, antique furniture and china. The live auction includes items such as a necklace valued at $7,000 and a trip to Denver, Colo.

Fletcher commended the Aztec and Farmington animal shelters for their increased rescue rates, which means the two shelters have been moving many of their pets to rescues in other shelters, such as those in Colorado.

In late January, the Aztec shelter sent more than 40 animals to a rescue in Colorado.

"The euthanasia rate is still extremely high in San Juan County, and it's primarily due to the lack of low-cost spay and neuter," Fletcher said.

The Humane Society of the Four Corners started offering low-cost spay and neuter in 2003 through the Aztec Animal Shelter. Since then, about 6,000 animals have been altered through the clinic.

Fletcher said she hopes the low-cost clinics reduce the number of animals local shelters take in.

"Spay and neuter is the only proven way to stop euthanasia," she said.

She said the shelters have made strides in decreasing euthanasia rates, but they cannot bring down the numbers on their own.

"It's a county-wide program, and it's going to take the community working together to fix it," she said.
