FARMINGTON — A Fruitland man pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and assault resulting in serious bodily injury charges on Monday.

Jason Yazzie, 31, was arrested on Aug. 6, 2013, based on a criminal complaint alleging that he killed a 2-year-old child on Aug. 2, 2013, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Yazzie admitted that he became frustrated with his stepson, who had been left in his care on Aug. 2, and repeatedly struck him in the torso, causing severe chest and abdominal injuries, according to the release.

He also admitted to hitting his stepson in the face multiple times throughout the day and threw the boy approximately five feet in the air, causing him to sustain severe head and neck trauma.

Yazzie has been in federal custody since his arrest and remains detained pending a sentencing hearing, which has not yet been scheduled.

He is expected to be sentenced to 20 to 25 years in federal prison as a condition of the plea agreement.
