FARMINGTON — Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly has appointed a member from the Western Agency to serve on the board of directors for Navajo Agricultural Products Industry.

Kyril Calsoyas, of Flagstaff, Ariz., is the CEO of Developing Innovations in Navajo Education Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides agricultural support on the Navajo Nation.

He has worked on policy and economic development for Navajo communities for more than 30 years, including forming the Western Navajo Food Policy Council and establishing the Navajo Farmer and Rancher Congress.

The board of directors sets policy, including establishing personnel policies, procurement policies and financial policies for NAPI, according to tribal law.

Speaker Pro Tem LoRenzo Bates, who represents Nenahnezad, Newcomb, San Juan, Tiis Tsoh Sikaad, Tse Daa Kaan and Upper Fruitland chapters, is sponsoring the legislation containing Calsoyas' appointment.

The bill was posted on the council's website and will be eligible for action on Thursday.

It is assigned to the Resources and Development Committee, and, if the committee confirms Calsoyas' appointment, he would serve for three years.
