FARMINGTON — A week after it started burning in the Ch'ooshgai Mountains on the Navajo Nation, the Assayii Lake Fire is still about 20 percent contained, according to a morning update from the Southwest Area Incident Management Team 3.

The fire has reached 13,482 acres, and 867 people are working on it. It is still about 10 miles northeast of Navajo.

Building on Thursday's work, crews today will remove dangerous trees that could harm firefighting efforts or cause the fire to ignite unburned vegetation, according to the morning update. Helicopters and planes are expected to continue dropping fire retardant and water on the active areas.

Today's hot and dry conditions may lead to the burning of islands of unburned vegetation in the fire's boundaries, which could mean that more smoke will be visible during the day.
