FARMINGTON — Farmington schools will work with an energy saving company to help the district reduce its utilities usage.

The Farmington Municipal School District's Board of Education approved a $1.26 million, five-year contract with Cenergistic, a company based out of Dallas, Texas. The company will work with the district to develop and implement energy conservation programs designed to reduce the consumption of water and electricity without any equipment upgrades.

Cenergistic spokesman Lance Wyatt spoke during the June board meeting about the company's goal to provide energy savings by working with district officials and educating them on the best tactics for reducing energy costs.

"We'll work with organizational behavior and changing behavior on how energy is used in the district," Wyatt said.

Wyatt said school districts can save upwards of 25 to 30 percent of the money spent on water and electricity by changing their behaviors, while purchasing new equipment can save around 14 to 16 percent of costs.

School board secretary Kyle Rhodes said it was made clear the district would not have to make any capital investments.

"They'll provide a fully-qualified person to head the program and train district personnel," Rhodes said.

Cenergistic will provide engineers to work with a full-time liaison, who will be assigned to the district to work with operations and maintenance staff to implement changes.

The contract is described as a "budget-neutral" program in which Cenergistic guarantees the savings will cover the cost of the program or the company will refund the difference.

Wyatt said New Mexico school districts in Carlsbad, Lovington, Hobbes, Las Cruces and Clovis are also working with Cenergistic to reduce energy costs.

Superintendent Janel Ryan said the contract was approved without seeking competitive proposals because Farmington schools will use the existing contract the Carlsbad Municipal School District has with Cenergistic.
