FARMINGTON — Farmington schools will be hosting a job fair Friday in an effort to fill 30 teacher vacancies before the start of the school year next month.

The Farmington Municipal School district is looking to fill 30 certified teaching positions and about 30 classified support staff positions before school begins.

Chris Pash, district human resources director, said the job fair is the first one held by the district in the 12 years he's worked for the district and he hopes to fill the positions before teachers report back to school on Aug. 11.

"We have so many positions open, we feel like we need to give this a shot and maybe see if there (are) people out there that considered being a teacher but didn't follow with the application," Pash said.

Some of the positions available include 12 elementary teacher positions, four mathematics, four special education, two gifted and other positions.

Pash said the 12 unfilled elementary teacher positions are the most the district has had open this late in the summer. And he said the district is struggling to hire special education teachers.

Seventy teachers have been hired for the 2014-2015 school year, bringing the total number of teachers hired to about 100.

Pash said that number is similar to the last two school years but the number of open positions still not filled is a new development.

Principals from Farmington schools will be on hand along with representatives from the San Juan College alternative licensure program to answer questions for people interested in teaching who have a Bachelors degree but might not have a teaching degree.

"Some of the other school districts have expressed the vacancies they have, we thought this would give our principals one last shot to bring in some people," Pash said.

Area districts also have some hiring to do before the start of the school year.

James Preminger, Central Consolidated Schools spokesman, said the district has hired 35 certified teachers, but had 36 open teacher positions as of Monday.

Lisa Williams from Aztec Municipal Schools said 31 teachers have been hired with four openings left. Bloomfield Schools Director of Human Resources Debbie Serrano said the district has hired 26 teachers and still has 12 openings available.
