FARMINGTON — On Monday, Disabled American Veterans national service officers will bring their office to Farmington to help area veterans file or check on the status of their Veterans Administration claims.

The office is on wheels — a cargo van that provides a way for the organization to reach out and assist veterans in need.

DAV national service officer Gary Prescott will be among the officers on hand to offer help.

"We go out twice each year to outlying locations and do veterans outreach," Prescott said by phone from his office in Albuquerque on Friday.

Prescott recommended interested veterans bring helpful identification with them, including a social security number, a DD-214, which is a military discharge document, as well as a picture ID, if possible.

Dannie Roberts, adjutant treasurer for the DAV's San Juan County chapter, located in Aztec, will be on hand at the mobile office to help ensure things run smoothly.

"We'll be there to support the officers, try to make their jobs easier," said Roberts, a Korean War veteran and retired Air Force senior master sergeant. "We'll have water and sodas for veterans, making sure there's plenty of shade and whatever is needed."

From Albuquerque, the mobile office will make the Walmart parking lot on East Main Street in Farmington its first stop before heading to Grants, Las Vegas, Taos and back to Albuquerque at the campus of The University of Phoenix.

"A lot of times, it's a mixed bag trying to reach our veterans, but this is one way we can try. That's new this year, to hit a campus or two to reach students who are veterans," Prescott said. "We want to try and help them get claims filed or statuses on claims filed or answer questions about particular cases they may have."

Prescott said DAV officers will also be available to help answer questions about health care, monetary claims or death benefits.
