Angela Minjarez was perfect on Friday in Kirtland.
The junior pitcher struck out nine Kirtland Central batters without issuing a hit or a walk as No. 2 Aztec (20-4, 4-0 District 1-4A) defeated the Lady Broncos 13-0 in the first game of a doubleheader.
“Angela did a great job. She pitched very well,” said Aztec head coach Jose Santistevan. “She hit every spot.”
It only took five innings for Aztec to finish off Kirtland Central in the first game.
The second game wasn’t any closer. The Lady Tigers defeated Kirtland Central 15-0 in the late game as Hailey Morris threw a two-hitter from the circle to earn a win.
“All year, we have tried to instill that it doesn’t matter who is pitching,” Santistevan said. “We will play good defense behind whoever. If we do that, we will be in good shape.”
Santistevan was also happy with the production at the plate. Aztec didn’t hit any home runs but had timely hits to the right places.
“Taylor (Santistevan) had some doubles and Angela Minjarez hit well in the first game, too,” Santistevan said. “She had three singles and drove in three or four runs in the first game.”
Aztec’s sweep of the Lady Broncos sets up a matchup next week with No. 1 Piedra Vista (19-5, 4-0) for the District 1-4A championship.
“This is the week. Everybody has been waiting and wanting to see this,” Santistevan said. “It is here, finally. The focus this week will be pretty intense. We will go to work every day and make each day as good as we can.”
