Navajo Prep will play Rehoboth for a District 1-2A softball championship later next week.

The Lady Eagles moved to 4-0 in District 1-2A and 17-5 overall after sweeping Zuni in a doubleheader on Tuesday.

Navajo Prep defeated Zuni 13-6 and 15-1.

“We had a few mistakes but kept battling. Once we adjusted to the high winds and the sand in everyone’s faces, we played well,” said Prep head coach Darin Wright.

Jazmine Kinsel pitched the Lady Eagles to victory in both games.

Navajo Prep had 11 hits in the first game and 20 in the second.

In Game 1, Kiere Rocke was 3-for-5 at the plate. She was 4-for-3 in Game 2.
Sydni Ancira was 2-for-2 with a three-run triple in the first game.

Lynshellraye Begay was 3-for-3 in Game 1 and 3-for-4 in Game 2.

Leisha Yazzie and Brooke Becenti both went 3-for-4 in the second game.

Yazzie also made the game-ending defensive play in Game 2 when she made a catch on a line drive to record one out before firing the ball to first base to double off a Zuni runner.

Navajo Prep will play Santa Fe Indian School this weekend before the big showdown with Rehoboth next week.

“That is what the girls are focusing on right now. We got through these games and now we have to play SFIS first, but then we can get to the grind and get our stuff done to prepare for Rehoboth,” Wright said.

Bloomfield 16, Thoreau 0

Bloomfield remained perfect in District 1-3A with a decisive win against Thoreau on Tuesday.

The Lady Bobcats (16-8, 6-0) defeated Thoreau 16-0 behind a one-hitter thrown by pitcher Thalia O’Neill.

Haili Bekes was 4-for-4 at the plate and Morgan Clark and Chelsey Runyon each went 2-for-3.

“We are feeling good and working hard every practice getting ready,” said Bloomfield head coach Andi Clark about her team’s confidence entering the 3A state tournament.

Bloomfield will finish district play on Thursday at home against Shiprock.
