The Aztec High volleyball team started its season off with a bang.

The Lady Tigers emerged victorious from a tournament in Belen on Saturday.

Aztec met the host school in the final, winning in straight sets 25-16, 25-18, 27-25.

"We had very consistent play," said Aztec head coach Anna Strauss. "The girls kept their composure. We still have a lot of work, but it's nice to see improvement.

The Lady Tigers (2-0) also picked up a straight-set victory over Thoreau earlier in the day.

Aztec's Aubrey Folk and Cory Zuniga earned all-tournament team honors.

Overall, Strauss likes where her team is compared to this time last season and hopes the team will continue to build on the momentum in the next game against Bloomfield on Thursday.

"We're much more mature than last year. The energy and confidence is just something we want to keep seeing more of," Strauss said.

Bosque 3, Kirtland 0

The Lady Broncos fell in straight sets to Bosque 25-11, 25-19, 25-19 on the road Saturday.

Kirtland Central head coach Brian Joe saw some signs of improvement, however, in the loss.

"I wasn't disappointed. I thought we played good," Joe said. "They killed us last year. We adjusted to their strategy and frustrated them a little."

Kirtland (1-1) will travel to Shiprock Thursday for a pair of games against the Lady Chieftains and Monument Valley.

"We played them a little this summer and it looked like they lost some players," Joe said of Shiprock. "They're one of our rivals, and I'm looking forward to it."

Girls Soccer

Bosque 2, Bloomfield 1

The Lady Bobcats dropped their second straight game to open the season, falling 2-1 to Bosque

Bosque scored the first two goals of the contest before Teagan Mosley netted the lone Bloomfield goal in the second half.

Despite the loss, Lady Bobcats' first-year head coach Kate Dunlap is seeing improvement in her team early in the season.

"The girls have good speed and we've been aggressive on defense," Dunlap said.

Bloomfield (0-2) will continue the season with a road game against Aztec on Tuesday.

Boys Soccer

Bosque 2, Bloomfield 1

Bloomfield lost a tight game to No. 2 Bosque 2-1 at home on Saturday.

"Bosque is loaded with seniors. It's supposed to be their year, so to take a team on like that, it really pumps us up and gets us ready for the rest of the season," said Bloomfield head coach Jarly Lopez.

The Bobcats opened the scoring 21 minutes into the game when Edgar Fonseca scored on a free kick.

Bosque responded with a goal just before half time to tie the score heading into the break.

The game remained tied for most of the second half until Bosque scored with two minutes left to secure the victory.

Bloomfield (0-2) will continue the season on Thursday against Aztec.

"The boys are coming along. We're learning and the experience will help us," Lopez said.
