FARMINGTON — The Shiprock baseball team is off to a solid start this season.

The Chieftains came away with the Thoreau Invitational tournament title on Saturday in Gallup.

Shiprock (8-1) swept all three games in the bracket, defeating Laguna Acoma, Hot Springs and Magdalena to claim the championship.

The Chieftains fell behind Magdalena 3-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning, but came up with three runs to get the comeback win.

Head coach Alfred Baer said Abraham Hopson and Rakeem Tsosie came up with key hits before Zander Dale hit a triple to tie the game.

Freshman Chance Harvey came up with the walk-off single for the Chieftains making way for the Chieftains to take the win.

On Thursday, Shiprock knocked off Laguna Acoma 8-4. The Chieftain batters came up with 18 hits in the victory to just eight for the Hawks.

Julian Aspaas got the win on the mound for the Chieftains.

Shiprock then defeated Hot Springs 8-5 with Hopson pitching a complete game in the victory.

The Chieftains will be in action next against Kirtland Central on Tuesday.

The Broncos are coming off a doubleheader sweep of Taos on Saturday and have won five of their last six games.
