FARMINGTON — The top senior basketball players in San Juan County put their talents on display during the opening day of the 33rd annual Arizona vs. New Mexico All-Star games.

In the boys game on Thursday, New Mexico came up with a blowout win 141-101 at Miyamura High School in Gallup.

Shiprock's Hiram Gleason scored 19 points, and Kirtland Central's Christian Mackey added 18 in the victory.

"They did an awesome job and just played well together. You would have thought they'd all been playing together all this time," said Shiprock's Chester H. Atcitty Jr., who coached the New Mexico team. "We just gave everybody four minutes, then rotated, and told them to all go out there and have fun."

Shiprock's Justin Begay finished with 15 points and KCHS forward Reese Foutz scored four in the game.

Atcitty said his main focus in the game was to make sure everybody enjoyed themselves and that players got equal chances to participate.

In the girls game, Arizona defeated New Mexico 68-66.

"Arizona hit some 3s from way out and basically got on a run from there," said Shiprock's Larenson Henderson, who coached the New Mexico team. "It was a fun, back-and-forth game."

Henderson said he enjoyed coaching the team and getting the 15 All-Stars to work together.

"We came in today and had a pep talk. We basically told them they're All-Stars for a reason and to go out and have some fun," he said.

Shiprock's Ashley John, Taylor Henderson and Courtney Steele, Kirtland Central's Keeshawna Ockerman, Navajo Prep's Muriel Waukazoo and Piedra Vista's Kaleigh Graham all made an appearance for the New Mexico team.

Stats were unavailable for the girls game.

The teams will play again on Saturday. Both games will again be at Miyamura High School.
