FARMINGTON — Before this weekend, Aztec High's softball team had lost just one of its 18 games.

But on Saturday, the team took a pair of losses right before the start the district season.

Volcano Vista swept a doubleheader against the Lady Tigers on Saturday in Albuquerque.

Aztec (17-3) lost the opening game 5-3 and then was shutout 3-0 in the second game.

The Lady Tigers couldn't capitalize on multiple scoring opportunities in the two losses.

"We had a lot of base running errors," Aztec head coach Jose Santistevan said. "We also had the bases loaded four times and didn't score a run."

Aztec fell behind 3-0 in the opener before tying the game in the top of the sixth inning.

The Lady Hawks (16-2) answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to win the game.

The Aztec hitters never got going in the second game, finishing with just four hits in the shutout.

"They just did a good job changing speeds with the pitches," Santistevan said.

Angela Minjarez and Hailey Morris each took a loss in the doubleheader for Aztec.

Santistevan said his pitchers threw well, but the defense didn't do a good job backing them up.

Aztec committed five errors in the two games.

The Lady Tigers will be in action again on Friday with a doubleheader against Farmington High.
