FARMINGTON — Farmington High tennis began the district season with some dominant performances.

The boys and girls teams each defeated Belen and Grants on Friday in Farmington.

The FHS girls swept through Belen 9-0 and then beat Grants 6-3.

"We were able to spread out the playing and get 10 girls to see some action," FHS girls head coach Pat McGrath said in an email. "Winning district is the first step to succeeding at state, and it was nice to get two wins."

The Scorpion boys also had easy times in their matches, beating Belen 9-0 and Grants 8-1.

"It was a good start to the district season for the Scorpions," FHS boys head coach Larry Larson said in an email.

The Scorps didn't drop a set against Belen, while Matt With at No. 2 singles and Eli Briody-Pavlik at No. 5 singles both won their matches 6-0, 6-0.

Briody-Pavlik also teamed up with Will Hall at No. 2 doubles to win 6-0, 6-0 against the Eagles.

Against Grants, Hall won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. No FHS singles player lost more than three games in matches against the Pirates.

Piedra Vista also opened its district season against Belen and Grants.

The boys and girls each emerged victorious against both schools.

The tennis season continues Tuesday with FHS and PV facing Gallup and Miyamura in Farmington.

"We look forward to next week and are excited for the rest of the season," McGrath said.
