FARMINGTON — Kirtland Central High School has named Cecil Linnens as the school's new athletic director.

Linnens, who holds a bachelor's degree in math education and a master's in secondary education, has more than two decades of teaching and coaching experience, including 12 years as the head of the Farmington High wrestling program. He will take over for the school's former athletic director, Kevin Graham, who will now focus solely on leading the Kirtland Central football program.

"It's a big change," Linnens said about the move from a coaching to an administrative position. "Instead of looking after one program, like I'm used to, I have a bunch of them now."

Linnens recently served as an administrative intern at KCHS, which gave him the opportunity to work with the Kirtland Central staff and begin building relationships with students.

"We had an opportunity to have Cecil Linnens as an administrative intern, and he showed excellent leadership potential to step in and take over as the athletic director," said Kirtland Central principal Shawna Becenti, adding that the respect Linnens has gained in the Four Corners coaching community will be beneficial in the new position.

Linnens said joining the administration is partly due to the wear and tear his body took while coaching, as well as simple curiosity.

"I always had some questions about why certain decisions are made and how they're made and the way they're made," Linnens said. "I wanted to understand that a little better, and I thought it was time."

In addition to being the Broncos athletic director, Linnens will serve as the school's dean of students, a position he feels ready for after his time as the school's administrative intern.

"I've already met most the kids," Linnens said. "A few of them I know a little better than others, but there are some great kids out there, and the staff is phenomenal. I'm excited for it, and I think the internship totally prepared me for that."
