FARMINGTON — The coaching position for the Piedra Vista boys soccer team has been a revolving door in recent years, but the Panthers hope to have found some stability.

Pat Denney will take over the team heading into the 2014 season.

Denney, who will be PV's fourth head coach in as many years, knows the Farmington soccer scene well. He has 17 years of experience coaching in the city's youth leagues and served as the president of the Farmington United Soccer Association for eight years.

The new Panthers' coach said one important factor for his team early on will be getting everyone playing a similar style.

"We definitely have potential," Denney said. "We'll be a young squad, but we just have to get them all on the same page."

PV athletic director Frank Whalen believes Denney's knowledge of the sport will help the Panthers as the squad tries to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2011.

"He has a passion for it," Whalen said of Denney, who was offered the position in June. "I think he's somebody who will be here for a while. He wants to see the program grow. It will take a lot of work, but we think he's the guy for the job."

Denney is still evaluating the team, which started practice on Monday, to see which style of play will best suit his players. But, he said, the team's strength lies with its midfielders.

"I think they have plenty of talent, and they just weren't utilized the right way," he said. "We want to get all the boys on the same page. Right now, they have four or five different philosophies running through their heads."

In the early practices, Denney said his focus has been on skill development and conditioning. The squad will turn its attention to particular offensive and defensive strategies as it prepares for its first game on Aug. 22 against Bosque.

"The No. 1 goal is to get them all playing the same type of soccer," he said.

Denney will have Shaun Taylor as his assistant. Taylor served as the PV girls head soccer coach in 2012 and 2013.
