SILVER CITY — This First Friday, there will be a host of holiday programs to showcase Silver City's festive spirit.

The events will also have an exciting audience as the New Mexico Tourism Commission will be in town this weekend with plans to experience Silver City's First Friday tradition.

The Silver City Kiwanis Club is again lighting the Gazebo at Gough Park at 5 p.m. Everyone is invited to join Kiwanis members for entertainment by the Kiwanis youth groups as the lights are turned on for the first time this year.

There will be a Kiwanis Christmas Song "Sing Off" competition, sponsored by Western Bank. The winning group will receive $100 for the charity or service project of their choice and $100 for their club treasury. Musical performances will be recorded live by the Gila/Mimbres Community Radio and broadcast as part of their on-air streaming. There will also be treats for the young and the young at heart.

Kiwanis would like to thank Ace Hardware for furnishing the lights for the Gazebo, the Silver City Fire Department for hanging the lights and Western Bank for sponsoring the "Sing Off" competition.

The Silver City Museum continues to host a free children's craft class held in the museum kitchen from 4 to 6 p.m. Participants will create decorative handprint holiday wreaths.

The Silver City Museum has also planned a special winter exhibit that will run from Friday through Jan. 20. The exhibit will feature a vignette of elegantly dressed Victorian era figures that will take the viewer on a stroll through the era.


Guests will begin with a view of a set table featuring the utensils of holiday cooking and dining from the many cultural influences of the families from the region. The vignette will transition into the attire of the day for indoor and outdoor activities. Guests will also have the opportunity to view photographs of the region and its people, snapshots and photographs will explore winter under western skies as it was from 1912 to the 1960s.
