Pate Elementary School joined other schools across the country in celebrating Dr. Seuss' March 2 birthday by conducting an hour long reading competition on Thursday. Each student in the school read a book of his choice and took a short quiz for reading comprehension.

Their scores merited points, and the students exceeded the school's goal of 200 points by over 100. The students' incentive of extra recess time certainly seemed to work.

Principal Therese Rodriguez said it's important to her that the students know about the legendary author whose books have been entertaining kids for decades.

His works have been the inspiration for many children's' movies, such as "The Cat in the Hat" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and the popular Broadway Music "Seussical."
