It's a good weekend to visit Carlsbad Caverns.

The bats are starting to return from their winter playgrounds, the weather forecast is calling for temperatures in the mid-80s, and Saturday's schedule includes a full day of Junior Ranger activities.

Kids ages 4 to12 will have the opportunity to explore the caverns this weekend and win prizes as part of the annual Junior Ranger Day celebration.

All young visitors will be able to complete activities in a free junior ranger booklet and earn a special certificate and patch commemorating the event, according to a press release from Carlsbad Caverns National Park. The park will have other free activities, including worskshops instructing them how to make bat masks and finger puppets. The events will take place on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

National Park Junior Rangers have been a special group of the National Park Service since the 1930s and at the Carlsbad Caverns for seven years. By participating in Saturday's events, children will have the opportunity to explore natural areas and learn about science, history, art and nature, according to the press release.

The caverns will also be open during the day for children and their families to explore, the press release stated. Visitor center hours will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
